A Coven is the term used to describe a gathering of witches who meet regularly to carry out witch craft. Witches of modern times may form small covens, but the history of witchcraft and covens is more uncertain. Those who believe that covens did exist in the past centuries back up their claims by providing evidence such as the confessions of witches who were under torture. For example, the earliest reference to the term coven was in 1662 when Isobel Gowdie confessed that in her experience witches met in covens of thirteen. In fact, many witches and experts on witch craft claim that the number thirteen is important because covens have always been groups of thirteen. However there is also evidence that indicates that covens have consisted of any number of witches, from as little as three witches gathering together to the thousands. It may also be of interest to know that in the past, although covens were supposed to be balanced out by both genders, confessions of witches have indicated that men outnumbered the women in some covens.
