The Sabbat is ‘one one of eight principle festivals in the calendar of modern witch craft,’ they include four grand sabbats – the Candlemas, Beltane, Lammas and Samhain, and also the four lesser sabbats – the Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice. These festivals are usually celebrated outside to mark the passing of the seasons. In seasonal rituals the priestess becomes the incarnation of the Goddess, who then delivers a charge. During the time of Christian conversion those who were members of the sabbat were believed to be wild, part-human, part-animal, men and women. Witches are said to apply magical ointments while practicing witch craft during sabbats. Many reports of sabbats in past centuries, and even in the early nineteenth century, are embellished, do not have evidence and are based on hearsay. In modern times, newspapers attempt to link witch craft and sabbats with Satanism.
