In Europe the term witch is described as male or female shamans. Witchcraft folklore and superstition has come from a number of different influences.
Over time the characterisation of a witch has changed from the image of a Pagan priestess or priest. With Christianity becoming the more dominant religion in Europe the church has incorporated the use of magic in their practices, referred to as Christian methodology involving saints and divine relics whereas in the old Pagan magick methodology which involved the use of techniques of numerous deities, amulets and talismans.
Traditional European witchcraft beliefs (such as those used by Pendle Witches) involved a diabolical pact with Satan or any other demon, or a type of intervention with evil spirits. These witches or wizards instead of following Jesus and his sacraments “the witches’ Sabbath”
